Whereas November, um, just feels like we’re all mixed up. Baseball in November is like a blizzard in April, like the leaves changing colors in January, like starting your spring cleaning in July. It’s just wrong. And it’s messing with our internal clocks. But once again this year, we’re stuck with it. So I think you should know that …Harper, Schwarber, Bohm, Marsh and Hoskins just became the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh Phillies to hit a World Series homer in November. The others: all-time November long ball leader Chase Utley (one in Game 4, two in Game 5 in 2009) and Ryan Howard (Game 6, 2009). Those Phillies bombardiers just became the first team ever (obviously) to hit five home runs in any November game.
Somehow, though, this was still his game. Manager Dusty Baker still entrusted McCullers to keep going. Even though all evidence pointed toward a pitcher who — whatever the reason — just did not have it. Then it got worse. On the very next batter. A World Series record-setting fifth home run against one pitcher. Finally, the manager had seen enough.
Lance McCullers Jr. stood atop the hill at Citizens Bank Park and waited for the next batter to step into the box. He looked back to center field, scrunched his face, then lightly kicked the dirt in front of the mound. He’d just allowed a 443-foot blast to Kyle Schwarber to put the Astros in a six-run deficit. He’d allowed three home runs before that — one in the first, two more in the second.

They screamed and chanted and stood — and this was before a pitch was even thrown. Ranger Suárez fired a sinker a little off the plate at 8:05 p.
The old record was three, by: The 2009 Phillies (two by Utley, one by Raul Ibanez in Game 5) The 2016 Cubs (Kris Bryant/Addison Russell/Anthony Rizzo in Game 6, Dexter Fowler/Javy Báez/David Ross in Game 7) The 2021 Braves (Jorge Soler, Dansby Swanson and Freddie Freeman in Game 6). And that comes to 16 days of not playing. Well, I don’t know about you, but that struck me as kind of weird (and also wild). So I asked my friends from STATS Perform to look into just how rare it is for any team to play only nine times in 26 days, especially considering they’re in the middle of a World Series.

Never in the history of the World Series had five of the first 20 hitters homered for any team. Let alone off the same pitcher (Lance McCullers Jr. ). Let alone on a night when their team hit more than twice as many homers (five) as singles (two). But it all happened on this night. Harper unleashed a ballpark-rattling thunderbolt on the first World Series pitch he ever saw in Philadelphia. … Schwarber mashed a 443-foot lumberjack shot into the attractive Phil-wood Forest of Arbor Vitae trees beyond the center-field fence. … Bohm and Hoskins fired laser beams that left the bat at 109 mph and 105 mph, respectively.
Oh, wait. Before Tuesday, it wasn’t any day.
